Carlos Zambrano Must Die– Game 1

Game 1- Cubs at Braves- April 5, 2010- 3:10PM

innings pitched:  1.1

pitches:  49 (28 strikes, 21 balls)

hits:  6

walks:  2

strike outs:  1

earned runs:  8

You know it’s not pretty when it’s only the fifth inning and I’m already compiling my thoughts.  Everything went wrong from the first pitch, even though the Cubs bought Z a 3-run lead before he took the mound.  He walked the leadoff hitter (plus he hit the leadoff guy to start the 2nd), and eventually gave up a 3-run homer to Jason Heyward in his debut MLB at-bat.  The heart of Atlanta’s lineup went 3-4 against Z, scoring 3 runs and 2 RBIs.  The only bright spot was a nice cover play at 1st base in the 2nd inning, but Z turned right around and overthrew 3rd base, allowing another run to score.  His ERA stands at 54.00, so at least he’ll be able to lower that throughout the first half of the season.

I’ll give you a point for the hustle play, Carlos, but it hardly helps against all the negatives.
